The Blessing of Being of Service

Some thoughts after Honoring Older Adults, Mental Health Awareness in May and participating in the Welcome Home Village.

In a world that often measures success by what we achieve, accumulate, or accomplish, Scripture offers a different perspective: there is deep blessing in being of service to others.

Jesus himself modeled this way of life. Though he was Teacher and Lord, he knelt to wash the feet of his disciples. He welcomed children, fed the hungry, comforted the grieving, and touched those whom others overlooked. Again and again, Jesus showed that greatness in God's kingdom is found not in being served, but in serving.

Being of service is a blessing because it draws us closer to the heart of Christ. When we offer a listening ear, prepare a meal, visit a lonely neighbor, teach a child, volunteer our time, or simply show kindness, we become participants in God's work of love in the world. Service reminds us that our lives are connected and that each person has value and dignity.

Service also changes us. It teaches patience when things do not go as planned. It nurtures compassion when we encounter another person's struggles. It fosters gratitude as we recognize both our own blessings and the resilience of those around us. Often, we begin serving with the intention of helping someone else, only to discover that we ourselves have been enriched.

The blessing of service is not found in recognition or praise. Much of the most meaningful service happens quietly and without fanfare. It is found in the smile of someone who feels seen, the relief of a burden shared, or the simple knowledge that God used our hands, our words, or our presence to make a difference.

The blessing of being of service is that it reminds us we are part of something larger than ourselves. We are partners in God's mission of love and hope. Every act of service, no matter how small, becomes a witness to God's grace.

May we continue to seek opportunities to serve, not because we have to, but because we are grateful for all that God has done for us. And may we discover, again and again, the truth Jesus taught: "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).

As I always say, Love God, Love People, Do Things!
