How to Join?

Becoming a Member at First Pres

Becoming a member is a way of publicly recognizing our kinship with this particular portion of God’s church family: that this is where you want to participate in the blessings of fellowship, nurture, and ministry, and also give those blessings back.

If you are pondering the step membership at First Pres, you may be surprised that there is only one initial requirement for membership here: your affirmation of personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Joining First Pres is not, first of all, about “becoming a Presbyterian,” though it is true that this particular church aligns with a Presbyterian style of Christian theology, mission and ministry. Members here come from all kinds of denominational backgrounds. It is about stating your commitment to follow Jesus in the context of this local church family.

So how do you become a member?

  1. Complete the Membership Series*
  2. Request membership by:
    1. Transfer from another church in which you’ve been an active member
    2. Affirmation of Faith and Baptism (if you’ve not yet been baptized)
    3. Reaffirmation of Faith (if you’ve already affirmed your faith and been baptized previously)
    4. Confirmation for children and youth who have been baptized and who want to confirm their baptism with a decision of faith to follow Jesus
  3. Be received into membership at a regularly schedule Sunday morning worship service

*The Membership series is offered three times during the year (October, February and April). It is made up of four classes which meet Wednesday nights after the all-church family meal, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The classes are fast-paced and engaging, led by one of our pastors. Childcare is available.
